Qualities of Successful Women in HVAC

Joining the Matt Chatts crew to discuss successful women in HVAC, Kathy Robideau of Kathy Robideau of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, Tracy Martin of Aeroseal and Courtney Meier of Temperature Pro San Antonio explained the qualities they saw most commonly in successful women leaders and entrepreneurs.

"Understanding that it's ok to not have all the answers," said Robideau. "Because if you surround yourself with a good team of individuals, allowing them to kind of come up with ideas and solve issues, I think that's important."

Meier and Martin jumped into the conversation by explaining the differences between a man and a woman in leadership.

"Women are very collaborative," said Meier, explaining that often women in leadership roles try their best to nurture and mentor their teams.

Martin expanded on this point, saying, "when women rise to a position of power and they have the opportunity to lead, they are excited about having the power to affect change. Where stereotypically, men tend to seek the power in order to have power over a team."

When asked to name qualities that top women earners commonly have, Robideau began by explaining that often they are competitive, curious, driven and work well independently.

"Definitely the competitiveness," said Meier. She explained that when she needed to hire someone to take on some of her responsibilities so she could focus on growing the business, she found herself competing with the new employee, which ultimately made them both better off as professionals.

Martin brought up another quality she often sees in successful women in HVAC: tenacity. "I think one other nuanced thing is having the 'why.' We can all be goal-oriented, we can all be focused on getting results, but when you couple that with the 'why,' and you really really understand what's behind it, I think that can really help accelerate your earning."
